    New bike, pods, pipes.. carbs??

    So I recently picked up a 198? GS850.

    It has a good set of K&N pod filters and it has a 4-1 exhaust. the carbs are pretty dang dirty and I am in the process of 100% rebuilding them. I would hate to spend the $100+ on a DynoJet kit if I don't need it. Is there a way I can tell if the jets have already been corrected to run this current setup? What should my course of action be in figuring this out? Thanks in advance!

      How about looking at the jet numbers and comparing to the stock jet numbers as detailed in the factory service manual?

        See what size jets are in it, compare to stock jetting. Dip the carbs, do it right, with all of the O rings and everything. See how it runs.

        Then ride it around a while looking for the rest of the bike.

          I suppose I could do that... Its been a while since I dug into these carbs. I forgot the numbers are usually on them... Sorry for the pointless thread.

            You didn't mention if it runs. I'm guessing no.
            1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

            2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

                    Poke around in there I believe I saw the chart for stock carburetor components. It was not a .pdf I think it was on One Drive or something like that.

                      If your bike has stock needles it will look similar to the one on the left. If it has a Dynojet kit it will look like the one on the right. Regardless of jetting, it will not run right unless it has the Dynojet needles. I have essentially the same setup as you. I have been there. You might get it close by shimming the stock needles etc but seriously the kit is worth it. It comes with the jets, needles, and air restrictors all in one neat package. Install them, set it per the manual, and profit.

                        Thanks for the help everyone and the love for the aesthetics of the bike. I just got done doing a PROPER rebuild. 100% disassembly, new o-rings, gaskets, cleaned VERY well. Thankfully it appears the PO already bought a Dynojet kit because all of the jets have already been adjusted and the needle is the slim one. Makes sense since I bought it with K&N pods and a 4-1...

                        I did want to get some clarification on the settings though... I have the factory manual and I have also skulked around on BassCliff's site but cant find exactly what I'm looking for. The owners manual says that the Pilot mixture screw is "pre-set" (that's super helpful!) And I also cant find anything about a starting point for the Idle screw. Considering I have K&N pods and a 4-1 exhaust (with muffler) where do you guys suggest I should start the mixture and Idle screw?

                        I've already adjusted all the valves, changed the oil & filter, replaced the intake boot O-rings, new plugs, etc. So after I get the carbs back on its "cross your fingers and hope it runs time". THanks in advance everyone!

                        Also, I havent painted the side covers yet, that's the only reason they aren't on the bike in the pic. I was going with black. Everyone think that will look ok?

                              UPDATE!: I set the mixture screws to 2 turns out and went ahead and installed the carbs. Filled her up with gas and VROOM!. She started right up. But then I realized... I didn't put the choke on... The bike starts easily and seems to run well but I know its not supposed to without choke right? So where do I go from here? I need to turn the mixture screws in right? because its running rich? should I go 1/2 a turn on all and see what happens?
