"Headlamp" and "Stoplamp" check lights on instrument panel intermittent

    1982 gs1100ez

On the instrument panel, I have 2 check lights on most of the time, but they also occasionally go off. (intermittent). They should both be off all the time.

They are the "Headlamp" check light (supposed to illuminate when the actual headlight burns out) and the "Stoplamp" check light. As both the headlight and brake / tail lights work fine and are not burnt out, these warning lights should never come on. And for whatever reason, the "Taillamp" check light is off and stays off (proper operation).

Anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions?

Someone else suggested it might be a ground issue. Anyone have pictures of where the various ground screws are on the bike and frame? (not the wiring diagram - I have that)

    Thanks, Gregg

Sounds like a ground issue at the instrument cluster. I would check the ground wire pin at the plug to the instrument panel.

Thanks Brendan W. Any pictures of the instrument panel plug? Like which pin is ground?

I see on one wiring diagram for the g version of the bike that there are two ground wires/screws near each turn signal?? What is the nearest frame ground or otherwise to the instrument panel?

Had that issue with my 83 1100E about 12 years ago. Same as you describe. The fix was to replace the LAMP OUTAGE WARNING RELAY......found under fuel tank. Apparently not available new..... Have a look, for example, at www.partzilla.com "Electrical" heading for years that are compatible. Lots of these units on eBay.

As much as I love my 11EZ's 'back to basics' instruments (after the '81's 'lunchbox' disaster with the 'Christmas tree' warning lights), the head, tail and stop light warning lights, plus the side stand warning, are elements I wish had been omitted.

The original UJMs got it right. Oil, turn, neutral and high beam are all that's needed. Anything else, I'd just disconnect. Less is more.
