Coil ohm specs...

Ok, I only looked through 5 pages, but I gave up.

I'm trying to ohm out my coils on the 1980 850 and I am getting open circuits to the spark plug cap termination. I have found the caps are bad, specifically the spring in the caps get corroded. So I sand the ends and try some dielectric grease. Clean the 8.6k resistor. I got one to work but I still would like some specs of what I should be getting as far as resistance from what wire to what wire, and what colors do what. Like the supply voltage and the fire wire.

Hi,

Plug caps are cheap. Just replace them.

As for specs, feel free to download the Suzuki Service Manual from my website. There's a color wiring diagram there too.

The manual will take about 20 minutes to download at DSL speeds. Do a "right-click" and "Save as..." to your hard drive.

Get some new caps, not worth screwing with 2- NGK XB05F & 2 VB05F

NGK caps are like $3 to $3.55 each depending where you order them from.

I know where I can get the caps, but it's 85 miles one way (Dennis Kirk). Good excuse for a ride? Either that or call all the auto parts places for the X and V NGK caps, hmm...

Anyway, I got an idea what the specs are. Primary side of the coils around 4 ohms. Secondary side, with out caps in place, 12k ohms. Both coils are similar. Add the 19.2k and you would get 31.2k ohms from spark plug cap to spark plug cap.

I read using the 5k ohm NGK caps and resistor plugs is the best for RFI noise suppression.

I hope this brings the old beast back to life...

Just go to a Napa. They usually have them on the shelf.

The secondary side of the coils are about right at 12K resistance but the plug cap resistors should be around 5K. I had thought about making up a substitute resistor out of the 5K resistors I bought at Radioshack. I guess today might be just the day to make them up.

also, if you use resistive plug caps, there is no need to use resistor spark plugs.
