Not a GS but need help please

Again sorry for the non GS question but I'm stumped here.

    2007 Yamaha 650 V-Star. (V-Twin)

Heres the story. (I must preface this with the fact my cousin, the bikes owner can barely turn a screwdriver, which is why he bought a brand new bike)

My cousin comes back from a ride and puts the bike back in the garage. Key is in off position.

He comes back a couple days later and tries to fire up the bike and go for a ride. Turns the key on and tries to start it, nothing. I get the call and go over with a voltage meter. Battery is dead, nothing in it. Usually there is somehting there, 1-2 volts something.

I take the batery cables off and put it on a charger to see if the battery is now toast. After charging for about a half hour, it go to hook up the cables and the starter starts to turn. Key is in off position. After fully charging the battery I could start the bike by touching the battery cables to the posts with the key turned on. No starter button needed.

Also it seems the starter is engaged to the flywheel all the time. when you put the bike in neutral it rolls fine, whenyou put it in first and engage the clutch, it won't roll. The clutch cable is fine and I can see it moving the arm its connected to.

The bike has had nothing done to it except 600 mile dealer service and a new battery, which I put in about a month ago and it ran and rode, fine right after.

Whats going on here??? Do I have a stuck solinoid? Any opinions appreciated.

    Jim

First of all find the starter solenoid and disconnect any small wires on it. Those wires or wire usually activates the solenoid via the starter button and all the starter lockout circuits.

If the starter motor does not turn after that then you need to get a wiring daigram and trace back on those wires.

Clarification if you would please. the bike cranks, or does "start" as in running on its own power?

key on and the bike starts and runs. key off, bike quits running and starter continues to crank engine until I remove the battery cables.

        very weird.

Either power to the starter solenoid when it shouldn't have power. OR a stuck starter solenoid (most likely).

The starter button could be stuck, if pulling the small wires off the solenoid stops the starter from spinning go the the start button and follow the wires from it to the harness and pull the connector then put the small wires back on the solenoid. If the starter is not turning reconnect the connector from the button to see if the starter turns over if it does it looks like it is the starter button. Good Luck
