Timing light suggestion?
Can anyone suggest a good and low $$ timing light? Have never, ever purchased one, and last time I used one was auto shop. That was 1983...

1) Walk into auto parts or tool store.
2) Purchase cheapo timing light.
What I'm saying here is that you don't need anything expensive or special for motorcycles or anything. These things always get beat around, stepped on, and tossed into dark corners, so I've never seen the point of spending a lot.
Make sure you get one that hooks up to the battery to power the light. I haven't seen a purely inductive timing light for a while, but they might be out there.
You also need to understand a bit about how your bike's ignition works to properly interpret the results -- it's a wasted spark system, meaning that four cylinder models fire two cylinders at the same time.Last edited by bwringer; 11-18-2010, 08:23 PM.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

This is what i use, a self powered timing light.
I bought it from a Mercury-Mercruiser dealer about 10 year ago.work on anything with spark plug leads.
The light or degree are not adjustable.
money well spend,
Marc

Are you looking for just a basic light or a dial back kind?
For a basic light I'd just find a Actron / Sun pro on Ebay..
Just be sure to get one of the inductive models with the puckup that clips over the plug wire.. You don't want to mess with the old inline types..

Ooh, I like that -- no battery leads to tangle and fart around with. The disadvantage is that you have to deal with the internal battery. If it's not used frequently, you may pull it out one day to find a corroded mess where the battery used to be.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
