re-wrap harness with....

Just a quick question.
I am thinking of pulling my harness, and cleaning it, replacing only what needs to...maybe all or most of the connectors etc.

Wondering when I am done, what you recommended I re-wrap with. Was thinking 3m tape...I think its called like 33 or something like that.

Any other suggestions?

I can't answer what might be best used to re-wrap you harness as I haven't got quite that far with mine. what I can answer is, what the electrical tape is called and that's Scotch 33+. darn good electrical tape!

There is some tape made specifically for this, like electrical tape but it's also heat shrink wrap, it doesn't turn to goo after a while like electrical tape... Sorry I don't know the brand.

3M Brand 33 will not hold up in a wet environment.

The original tape is non adhesive (or very little) and is not a heat shrink. I suggest if you do use regular 3m electrical tape wrap it twice, the inside layer sticky side out, the outside layer sticky side in. This allow the wires to be pulled a bit to adjust corners, it also keeps the "gummy mess" off the wires. Other people use "Friction tape" which is the same as "Hockey tape".

The harnesses I've opened were pretty much a sticky mess so I question this assertion that Suzuki didn't use electrical tape. When wrapping the harnesses on my bikes I used that Supper 33+ tape. The 33 is thinner than the 88 and better for harnesses because it isn't quite so bulky. If anyone has a recommendation that's better I'd love to hear about it.

when i refurbed my loom i used heat shrink tubing.its great stuff, flexible,strong,resistant to most things and available in a wide variety of colours.
the downside is that it is tricky to get the right size tubing for the cables if you have to slide it over the block connectors. i replaced all my block connectors so snipped the old ones off, slid on the tubing and heated it before adding the connector blocks

there is a wire harness tape that i saw people use in their car harnesses it was made by tesa and its made out of fleece i believe

Just use a good electrical insulation tape and over wrap the start and ends so that it does not unravel easily in heat or over time and it will be as good as original. Make sure you have cleaned and removed all oil and dirt from the wires before you start and wrap with a bit of stretch to the tape. Double wrap in areas where it may move and rub.

I will suggest staying away from the ribbed conduit or even heat shrink, meaning anything other than the OEM method. These firstly make the harness thicker and harder to bend or move freely. Secondly if you ever have a wiring fault or need to add a wire in the future and need to open up part of the harness you will understand my suggestion better!

On older stuff Ive done, I use Berry Plastic loom tape. Good stuff.
