    sparking points?

First of all, I have finally finished my 1979 GS550e project. It took exactly one year, $3000.00 and lots of hours of work. Everything has been rebuilt or replaced. Everything that is, but the points. I was searching some threads on sparking points and found some guys saying it was ok to have sparking between the points. Others said it wasn't. I do see quite a bit of sparking on my bike. It runs really well since the rebuild, but last night cylinder #4 was cold and the bike ran crappy. I replaced the plug and it runs well again. Just wondering if the sparks between the points is normal.

    Thanks

It is only "normal" if the condesors are bad.

Every time you see a spark, a little bit of metal gets transferred from one side of the points to the other. Keep it happening, you will soon have pitted points that need to be replaced.

You can replace the condensors or replace the whole points setup with an electronic ignition conversion from Dyna.

Maybe we've been hanging around together too much?

Some day, we might actually meet.

My "neck of the woods" moves around.

Currently, they are in upstate New York, just a few miles from the Adirondaks and a few more from the Catskills.

After talking to a bike mechanic I know, and some reading on this website,
I've decided to upgrade to the Dyna-s ignition. Should get to it next week.
Now I have to remove the carbs and find out why the 2 drain hoses for the right side cylinders are spewing out gas intermittently.
              thanks guys
