    Bike in a box (wiring time)

    I bought a 1983 gs 750 (in pieces) as a summer project.

    So far a have gone from a pile of parts to a rolling/starting chassis.
    I have spent hours reading threads on this form, many of which were very helpful but i have not read anything to help me with my current problem.

    So as i mentioned earlier I have a rolling / running GS750. Now that it is running I want to know how fast it is running. so a few days ago I fitted the tach. I have installed tachs in cars so no biggie rite? well...

    Well I opened up the gauge cluster and read the back of the tach PCB and deduced that orange + white - and brown is the trigger.

    so gave it power and took trigger from one of the coils and fired it up.....
    The tach did nothing.... so i spent time reading some posts and using my tester to check resistor values. I found 1 resistor with much higher Ohm than it should. I could not read it so i went down to a local radio shack like place near by and asked what it was and he said 33ohm resistor most likely a 2watt.

    I bought it soldered it in wired it up to my bike turned the key and before I could use my handy dandy starter motor trigger the tach was all ready climbing to redline???

    So I have a tach that when ever it has DC power the needle will climd (12.8v= pinned at redline) (6.8v= 7000rpm) (4.3v=2000rpm)

    just thought Id throw those last figures in for fun I had some button cells around and I was in a curious mood.

    any help with this would be great. I would rather fix this tach than buy another one from ebay.

    33 ohm 2 watt resistor seems unlikely to me for a gauge setup. Maybe Radio Shack goofed and its 330 or 3300 ohm. How physically big was the resistor you removed? common resistors tend to be in 1/4 or 1/2 watt range.
    Summer project? where on planet are you?

        I understand that in the world of resistors size means little. But in this instance I think it is relevant.

          Well, I'm convinced - it is a larger wattage resistor- those little guys in pic are typical 1/4 watt type. You need a member with same cluster to investigate hook up.

          member dragonpaul in general maintenance forum might be able to offer clues from his cluster

              so after a little investigation i found this pat to be faulty


              in this image you can see (part) SM014 1e18
              this integrated circuit had failed.


              I got on for free of a dude i found on craigslist.

              after soldering it in. The tach came to life.

                  Not that im aware of. he was cleaning out his garage. (making wife happy)
                  he had a bunch of different tachs in different states of disassembly.
                  Now I have different tachs in different states of disassembly. Most of witch are mechanical.

                      Today I rode my bike for the first time.


                      Just a short ride to get a feel for the carbs. (Im dying to know if my carb cleaning worked)

                      Brand new battery with a full charge 14.2 volts when i took it off the charger.
                      13.8 volts an hour later when I put it into my bike.

                      I cranked the choke hit the start button and she fired up.
                      a few pops and sputters but that went away fairly quick.
                      Well i check the voltage on the battery after 2-3 min of running and 16.2-17.63 volts.

                      What the heck is up with that???????

                      I guess tomorrow im pulling my wiring back out of my bike and checking everything.
                      Plus rereading the "stator papers"
                      I dont remember reading anything about Very hi voltage.

                        Hi,

                        It sounds like your regulator is not regulating. Go through the Stator Papers and see all of the supplemental documentation on the electrical page of my little website.

                        Does your r/r unit have a "sense" wire that is not connected?

                          the Carb Cleanup Series - Stator Papers and your website are the only reason my bike runs at all.

                          un fortunately something came up and i wont be able to work on my bike till tue at the soonest.

                          there is so much trouble shooting I wont to do.

                          not working on my bike is going to eat at the back of my brain.

                            waiting for electrosport.

                            I ordered a R/R from Electrosport. Wile i was waiting I decided to pull the motor and do some polishing. I was surprised by how much work was involved in getting the paint off the engine parts.

                            I got the polishing done (to the best of my ability) before the new R/R arrived from Electrosport. so the bike was sitting waiting for the new part when it came in the mail. I installed it and noticed the same problem as before.

                            I emailed the Electrosport itemizing every little detail and step taken in my rebuild of this bike. i painstakingly explained my testing procedures and the results the gave.

                            Unexpectedly the dude from Electrosport actually picked up the phone and called to discuss my charging system issues.

                            long story I know, I thought I should tell it though. Electrosport sent me a second R/R and now im not seeing voltage above 14.2 at around 9000.
                            and it 1000RPM it seems to settle around12.5v

                            As far as i can tell my battery is charging, but not over charging so im good.
