    Strange black box

While still waiting for my gaskets....I decided to look at the electrics of the GS850. The original 79 bike im doing up had a Vetter fairing and the front part of the wiring loom is ruined by some PO while connecting fairing lights.

So I went to my donor bike, and 80 GS850, BUT with contact points, VM carbs and a kickstart, so I assumed it was a leftover from 79, sold in 80 and must be exactly the same bike... I was mistaken.

I found a strange box and after some searching I discovered the donor bike has a self cancelling turn signal system. wow

Question: How good and reliable is this system? Should I put it on my bike or mend the older and simpler loom? Any ppl that actually have this system and use it and like it? I've never seen anything like it !

Both the '79 and 80 850's came with self cancel turn signals. (at least in the states they did)
the '79 units weren't all that that good.

how to identify the different systems... the 79's used a three position turn signal switch and the TSCU had a metal top cover over the two relays inside it. the '80 used a five position turn signal switch and the TSCU was all plastic.

I'd say leave it out, they are prone to problems from what I've read. I just went through my loom and took it off, just in case.

        Thanks folks,
I looked at it a bit more, that TSCU system is wired into the speedo, has different turn knobs...I think I'll save myself a lot of headaches and go back to my simple loom and mend it. Less complicated is better I think, especially when 32 years old

Twas an all plastic TSCU by the way, I'll put it on the shelf

Those two wires from the speedo are the distance sensor... the turn signals will still flash without it connected, but won't automatically cancel.

I had no idea what the distance sensor was until just now.
