    Trip on Sun HELP

    Hi All
Getting ready to go on a 2 day junket, and am concerned a little about the charging sys.
Have a 80 550E ,replaced the R/R with one that has a sensor wire. The voltage at the Battery will not go above 13.4 V even at 5k RPM. Is this normal . On Bikecliffs' quick check page it indicates the Voltage should be about 14v, however if the R/R has a sensor wire and its from a different bike should I still get 14-15 at 5k.
Am I OK to go on my hop.

    THANKS

Make sure you have a good ground between the reg and the battery. Check voltage between the battery + and the fuse block + reading should be less than .5 volts

I have one ground going directly to the battery and the other to the frame.

13.4 VDC is not a good charging voltage. Why did you replace the RR ? What was the charging voltage with the old RR ? Did you check the AC output on each of the three legs of the stator ? I would be leery of any trips too far from home.

I'm getting 60 v AC on all three legs of stater...The R/R was replaced because of poor output 12 v?

The charging volt seems to top out at 2500 . Have a spare SH543-12 but I don't see it listed under compatible R/R.
            Thanks

I have a SH-541-12 unit- two green, two red/white,3 yellow and a black sense wire- is your unit similar? where did you connect sense wire on this other R/R ( the one that you are testing now) ?

                Hi All
My apologies for not updating sooner... life got in the way and haven't been riding.
So ..In spite lower than normal voltage, I did go on my 2 day 600 mile ride and experienced no electrical problems.
Two weeks ago I finally had the time to dig into the system and I did find 2 problems.
                First..
When I replaced the R/R I used a 4 flat male to female connector(used for trailers) with conductive grease on the pins and some of the existing connectors ...Bad move with the grease and original connectors .
Replaced all the connectors with good quality flat spade connectors with a dab of anti-oxidant grease.
Second..Checked all my soider splices and found 1 bad joint (loose) .
Now the system is happy and all the readings are textbook .
Thanks for all the help, without it, I wouldn't have found my stupid mistakes.
