I finally found out what was up with the starter, it seems the Turn signal control unit was fried and the circuit comes through there. Plus side is that every electrical connection and every ground has been cleaned as well as all switches disassembled and the whole damn system cleaned up. I did all that and it still didn't work so I started swapping components as I fortunately had some spares around the place. Many thanks to all who waded in with advice and support, very much appreciated! All that's left of the gremlins now is the oil pressure light and the side stand indicator and that could just be bulbs. Again many thanks for the constructive ideas! Cheers Paul
