    Coil Test Inconclusive

I have an '81 GS650G, I have tested the coils and my results are inconclusive. Spec calls for 3-5 Ohms (primary) and 30K-35K (secondary).
I got the following numbers for both coils:
    4.2 ohms primary
    15.4K secondary

The secondary result would indicate a bad coil but is the same on both coils. BTW, I did the test without spark plug caps.

In Billy Ricks article (members.dslextreme.com/users/storagecliff/images/electrical_odd-n-ends.html#A11) he says you should get a secondary reading of 15K-20K for an aftermarket coil.

My coils are definitely stock as I have matched the part number with Suzuki.

So (finally my question) are these damn coils any good?

    Thanks!

they are probably OK, main failures are usually broken wires and then you get OL, if it is heat related then your room temp tests tare not much good either. Do they spark? Is the spark blue or yellow make sure you have good voltage to the coils (almost the battery voltage)

      They're just fine.

        Voltage To Coils

So, I tested the voltage to the coils (probe to orange/white wire and the other probe to battery negative terminal) and got a reading of .05 volts for both coil connections. That doesn't sound good or I'm doing something wrong. The bike starts. Any thoughts?

        Thanks for all your help.

0.05V is definately bad. did you test them with the ignition switch on and kill switch in run position? you should have close to 12V

Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

yes test your meter across the battery first as a check. Nothing to do with the coils.

Oops, the old kill switch. Voltage was fine. Thanks again.
