    universal fuel guage

Was thinking of fitting a modern universal fuel gauge on my gs 850 it has custom clocks so it would just be fitted by bracket I'm just wondering if anyone know how it assembles to the bike I know there is two wires under the tank is it just fitted to them ? Also the float level sender next two the wires the tube goes no where is that normal these sound like stupid questions but would be apreciated cheers.

'It' bolts to the side of the fuel tank.

You're still not making very much sense.

            "What are you asking"

            "Plug them in?"

            ha,ha,ha,ha.

There are just two wire for the fuel sender, + and a (-), nothing fancy. The hose that comes off the fuel sender is suppose to be there, it is an overflow system in case a leak occurs. It goes along the side of the gas tank and drops down through the frame between the tank and the battery somewhere.

If I'm not mistaken, the stock sending unit has a certain ohm range that it operates at. Something like 100ohms = full tank, and 10ohms = empty (I'm just making those numbers up). The range should be listed in the service manual. But some universal fuel gauges have a different range all together, like 0-70ohms (again, just making up numbers).

Check the service manual and the specs of the fuel gauge you want to use.

Right that's all I wanted to know because the wires come from under the tank would they connect to the fuel gauge and then would there be a wire that then connects to the battery for the fuel level light on the guage etc also thanks for the advice on the level sender and to those who couldent understand my explanation apoligies I never cared much for the english language.

Should just be 2 wires sticking out from the wiring harness in the vicinity of the coils or the rear tank support. On the 850s I think its at the cross member. Each is color coded to match the wires off the tank sending unit. To test the gauge itself, just put a jumper into the harness wires and turn on the key to see that the gauge actually moves to the full mark...or slightly past it.

the universal guage that I know that works on most bikes, is to take off the gas cap and look in there with your eyeball.

Redman....first thing I do if a bike doesnt have a fuel guage is to fill and ride till having to hit reserve. rest then trip meter and read the milage when switching over. Now start looking for fuel about 30 miles before you get to that known "Out of fuel " milage. Reset trip meter each time you fill up and just watch that for a fuel gauge.

Two wires: In stock wiring, one is connected to ground wire and other is connected to wire that goes to the guage in instrument panel.
Sender characteristics is this: Empty is about 100 ohm (manual says 100-120) and, half full is 25-40 ohms, empty is about zero ohms (manual says 1-5 ohms).
THat is the characteristics of the stock sender in the tank. I don't know what your universal guage that you might have is expecting.

Tube: Is just a drain line. Is there for if there is a leak in the gasket, so the gas doesn't drip over the engine. Does not have anything to do with actaull operation of the sender or guage.

You can ask us about stock Suzuki stuff.

I would have to ask you about what ever aftermarket thing you got, unless I happen to have the same aftermarket things. You have not identified what afternmarket thing you have.

yeah i can do that but it means pulling over to check it which isnt ideal on busy roads really and cool the wiring on this gs has been made up by the previous owner so theres no true way of putting it on i guess ill have to figure where it wires too the only reason i want it is because its been chopped up the bike and has bellmount air filters and jet sizes of 147.5 i think so fuel to a tank is about 80 miles to a TANK which is diabolical so im thinking of swapping up to K and N filters and maybe downsizeing jets do you think i can use the 147.5 with the k and n filters ? or will i have to downsize its alot of fuss but 80 miles isnt enought personally.

Yes, your disdain for the English language is painfully obvious, but a little consideration for your readers would be nice. It is VERY hard to read your posts. With virtually NO punctuation, we can't tell where you stop making observations and start asking questions.

By the way, what language do you prefer?

Two things going on here that contribute to some confusion.
                              1. Not exactly familiar with "bellmount air filters", but they sound a bit like what we call "pod filters". Going up THIRTEEN jet sizes to compensate for them is just a bit overboard.
                              2. One of your early posts was looking for a tank. What did you get? If you have a small chopper-styled tank that only holds a gallon or two, 80 miles to a tank is great. However, if you have a standard 850G tank that holds 5.8 gallons, you have a serious problem.

Give us a little more information about your bike, such as: air filtration system, exhaust, any other engine mods like big-bore kit, radical cams, etc. and we can come close to guessing what jets you might need.
