    Regulator compatibility.

    I pm'd basscliff but my box is now showing no sent messages so I might as well throw this one out to the group anyway.

    I have an 82 gs1100gk. Just picked up a lithium ion battery and wanted to make sure it lasts so I also bought a K6 gsxr1000 regulator(7 wire).

    The original question I asked on another board is, does it really not matter which wire each of the yellows connect to? the reason I ask is because on my bike, the harness has three different colored wires. there is a white/blue, a white/red, and a yellow; rather tan three yellows.

    A member on that forum brought up another concern. will this regulator even work for my bike? the concern was that the bike might have a permanent magnet system, where as the regulator is from a bike with an electromagnet system.

    It doesn't matter which of those three colors wires you connect your three yellows up to.

    Is there any sort of part number on the device in question?

      Some of later gsxr models had alternators (like in car,etc)- the R/R for these would be useless on permanent magnet style system. Do some reading for charging happiness

        unfortunately there is no part number on it, but it did come off a K6 gixxer. I looked that up and the part number should be 32800-41F11

          everything that i'm coming across indicates that they used a permanent magnet system in the k6 gsxr. Is there any other concern regarding this rectifier not working on the gs? I can't seem to find anything definitive on the new rectifier being a shunt or series type though.

            Find the wiring diagram for the bike. That will tell you if it's from a rotation field style alternator, which you can't use, or a P.M. style alternator which you might be able to use.

                  It uses a P.M. style alternator.

                  The colours in the wiring diagram don't match what you have. It shows B-B-B for the stator connection and B/R-B/R__ B/W-B/W for the others.

                    I did notice that, but figured this one was replaced at some point, and luckily enough I did happen to stumble across that recall. doesn't look like it will effect this though.

                      My impatience got the better of me and I rigged up the new regulator. Waited until the battery was fully charged, and got the bike warmed up. The voltage stayed between 14.28 and 14.39 with one very brief tickle of 14.4; no matter how high I revved it or for how long. And when the regulator started dumping power it never dropped below 14.28. Considering the lithium battery isn't supposed to be charged past 14.6 I think we have a winner!

                        Sure it works, but the shunt R/R is taxing the stator- I hope it works forever, but you improve the your odds by opting for a series R/R that puts much less strain on stator. Don't forget to test lithium battery voltage when everything is nice and toasty - after a nice ride!

                          will do. And as far as the shunting. I still haven't found any literature whether this particular R/R is a shunt or series type. but, the bike was designed to run with a shunt and nothing has been removed or changed as far as drains on the system, and headlight is always on, so it can't be that bad.
