    Neutral/gear indicator switch locaton?

I'm having an intermittent neutral indicator light issue where the light wont come on when in neutral on my 92 GS850GL. I've checked the bulb and it's not the cause of the problem. The problem first showed up as the light cutting in and out when I revved the engine but now it wont come on at all. The other gears indicate just fine. I've looked in the manual and it doesn't tell me the location of the switch. Can someone clarify exactly where the switch is located? I'm thinking it's behind the gear shift cover in back of the stator cover but not sure exactly. Also, if there is any info on any gotchas with taking the switch off to clean it, that would be good info as well. I'm betting it's a dirty contact at either the switch or main harness end.

First place to look is at the joint under the tank, towards the back of the tank on the LH side. You're looking for a blue wire on its own. 9 times out of 10 it'll be loose or corroded.

OK, I'll check there first. For future reference, where is the actual switch located? I see from pics of it that it's cylindrical in shape with two mounting screws. Is it located under the left side secondary drive cover? If I remove the screws, is there anything that will pop out or fall off that I should be aware of? Not really worried about it, but I would just like a heads up.

The actual switch is down on the lower-left side of the engine, just inside your left foot. You have to remove the shifter cover to get to it.

Removing two screws will allow the switch to be removed, there is a spring-loaded pin that might spring out.

I would be more-inclined to go with hampshirehog's suggestion, though. Remove the tank, find the bundle of wires that goes down the left frame rail. There will be a separate blue wire that runs along it. There is a connector right near the back of the fuel tank. Clean that connector well, it is your most-likely culprit. If that doesn't work, check the selector switch, but I would not do the switch first.

Agreed that the wire connection is the most likely culprit since the problem occurred soon after I did my last valve adjustment. During that time the tank was removed and the wire bundle was disturbed. Just wanted to know the location of the switch for future reference.

Just as everyone suspected... Problem solved with reconnecting the bullet connector under the gas tank.
