Models with Hall Effect Signal Generator and Mechanical Advance

Hey all, I'm back to thinking about a more generic and inexpensive ignition option for the odd GS models like the 80 - 82 450's that are hard to find ignitors for. There's at least one 550 and a 250 that fall into this category as well...

The solution has to be simple and robust for reliability. While I love that Kokar went and did that circuit board and did an awesome job with it, I don't trust myself enough to do a reliable job of it, and I know there are others out there who can't cope with that sort of thing either.

Long story short, I may need to go down this path soon if things persist as they are going.

Anyway, I'm still contemplating adapting the GM HEI style modules but these don't work "as is" with the 450's signal generator, but they seem to work for the models that have hall effect style signal generators.

So what models out there have mechanical advance and hall effect type signal generators? I figure if I can swap the pickups on to my 450's stock plate and use the rotor, then this should be a relatively simple operation.

I'm gathering bits to make a test rig at the moment so I don't need to keep pulling the bike apart...

I have contemplated using an 83 onwards 450's setup or the GS500's up to about '04, but then I would need to modify my existing rotor to work with the hall effect pickups, and then there's a whole world of pain to ensure it lines up perfectly with the locating pin on the crankshaft end etc. Adapting an existing set up would be far simpler.

Here's the sort of thing I'm talking about:

    Pete,
Just an FYI. I have a plan for an electronic ignition system with capabilities similar to a Dyna 2000 (actually more) but will not require a different pickup to what you already have. It will provide very accurate timing (even if you have points) and provide electronic advance and programmability.

It will not be like a Dyna-S where the electronics is on the plate. That is fighting a "God" barrier trying to put electronics in such a harsh environment. In stead it will have an external module that will be approximately 2"x 3". The design has been started, and parts have been ordered for preliminary brassboard checkout.

There are lots of ignition systems in the world, but they are all so specialized for particular models and makes. This new ignition will be much more flexible as it uses what is already there and so is much more adaptable. Other than doing some preliminary tests on sensor pickups, the biggest issue is how many bells and whistles to put in it. I'm hoping to have prototypes available before the end of the year.

Price will be more than a Dyna S type ignition but much less than other the external box alternatives.

That's the exact setup that's on the 650 shafties-right down to wire colors! note that only the blue and green wires connect to ignitor-the red just connects the two coils. Plus the 650 ignitor seems durable, tolerates a low voltage (less than 11 volts) and still fires!

Jim: Cool! I will definitely keep an eye out for that! The only catch on my 450 would be the mounting location... I struggled to squeeze the SH775 in... it would require a complete re-design of my electrics tray... the last Dyna S I bought was around $215 here from memory too.

When do you think you'll have a prototype up and running?

Tom: Good to know! At this stage I'm just looking for what models come with that style so I know what to try to get my hands on for my testing.
