If you disconnect the R/R hot wire first and check for current through the 15amp fuse you'll know if the R/R is the source of the problem.

You won't need pictures, just mark the + feed wire for the R/R for future use. Pick one wire of each color from the stator and tape the remaining two back to be abandoned. That will leave a yellow, white/blue and green/white that go directly to the new R/R's three wire plug in no particular order. If you use the Triumph plug harness, the brown wire of the two wire plug goes to the +12V R/R feed that you marked. The black wire goes directly to battery negative. you will have a green/white and white/red wire from the harness left over. That was where one leg of your stator was diverted through the headlamp switch. They are abandoned. You can plug them together to get them out of the way.

Sorry I'm so slow with this guys... been on a bit of an adventure with the 850....
So this Sh-775 seems too big to go under the left hand cover. And I see suggestions to put it under the battery which doesn't seem to have room on the GS1000. Sooo. where do you guys with 79GS1000's put this thing?

Oh and the 2 wire plug on what I assume is the Triumph plug harness (I used that part number) does have one brown and one black wire... for some reason each of those is then spliced into two wires each... two browns and two blacks. I assume I just remove these splices and follow the directions of OldVet below... brown to +12V R/R feed and Black to negative battery terminal?

        Thanks

1979 GS1000L panel and a different starter solenoid from what's shown in the picture.

That's the same RR alright. And seems to fit dandy. Didn't the fuse box and main fuse go under there though?

Not sure if there's the same amount of room on the 79, but on my 1980 1000G the SH-775 fit under my battery box with enough room to connect it up. The stock R/R was located in the same area. I only needed to slot the new R/R holes a hair inward. I removed the battery box first in order to mount the R/R. Made it much easier to work on. I then reinstalled the battery box with the R/R attached.

On this particular panel the fuse box will mount just to the right of the SH-775. It isn't as simple of and installation as it looks. I will need to make up some standoff's to elevate the R/R above the electrics panel in addition to finding a suitable replacement starter solenoid.

OK so I guess I'm looking for another option that's worked well without the effort you describe.
Anywhere else to put this thing that's worked on a 1000?
