    1978 Gs 1000 E stator question

Ok I have been looking for a stator for my bike , yeah you can order online and pay $150 buck and wait 10 days or try your luck ordering off of ebay ..well I have found this cycle salvage shop close to me and spoke to the owner . He tells me bring in my stator and we can match it up with something for $30- $40 bucks
Yeah I understand this could be a short term repair . As it would be used .
But this is my option to be up and running this weekend ..
So im wondering is there anything in particular im looking for while trying to match up a stator ? The guy sais he has hundreds of them and hes certain we will find a match ...

Stator matchmaking service! wow! Since you have the 18 pole stator (but don't/can't use Steve's rewinder, bring stator cover with your old stator to make sure it fits.! Look for one that hasn't been BBQ'ed and check ohms lead to lead (about 1 ohm) and also to stator core (infinite ohms would be nice)

Also make sure the the lead lengths are long enough.

So as long as its an 18 pole , fits in the cover , wires are long enough , and I get 1 ohms on each leg I should be good ?
Wasnt sure if these things push push out more ac power then others ?? But I guess the R/r would control that ?

          "... I get 1 ohms on each leg "

Don't forget to check leg to stator core- this is important as winding might be shorting out on core.

You are looking for a 18 pole stator. You can trust Steve on this site, he is involved with a rewinding service and will be a more affordable safe source for a quality stator. Hopefully he can ship to Canada.

Steve is sure to show up- probably/might have rewound stators in his pockets -I don't know about shipping your way.

May be a stupid question ! But can I ask how to test leg to core Tom ? To test the leads I should be able to put meter to ohms touch red to each lead one at a time .then ground the black out on case or frame ?
Please correct me if im wrong

Yep. That would be correct. You should measure open on each leg to ground.

The best test of the stator is the running AC test unless you have a megger, the resistance tests are useless.. Didn't you have two pair that read low voltage, you want to be close to 70 VAC on all three pair? If not your stator is bad. I was the one who said the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.

Yes, that will work; put black probe on inside of stator core- scratch tip across laminations to make good electical contact- hopefully there will be none!
