    1978 GS1000E Indicator problem

    Hi
The indicators on my 1978 project GS1000E are not working and I suspect it is the control unit, someone said you can slave in a replacement relay/unit in to the existing control unit.
Has anyone ever done this and if so can they let me know the part details and where I can get one.
I did get a replacement control unit from Ebay that had sat in a shed for years and when connected I actually got one flash before it stopped again so it is likely to be the unit.
Any help or information would be great as this is the only thing I need to fix before I can get it through an MOT ( I know it could go through without indicators due to age but I want the bike to be 100% working).

Since you are talking about "MOT", I am going to presume that you are on the eastern side of "the pond".
That will change some of the recommendations for where to get parts.

Please go into the User CP area and update your location. Also take a minute or three and post a short sig that shows what bike you have, so you don't have to remember to mention it every time.

As I recall, making a substitution in the earlier bikes was not a simple "plug and play" solution. There are hoops to be jumped through, but I don't know all the details, as I have not had to fix any signal problems on an early bike.

Regardless, are you SURE that you have power to the signals? Does the horn work? Does the brake light work? They are all powered by the same fuse, if there are multiple fuses. Again, all my bikes are '80 or newer, and all have multiple fuses, some of the early bikes were not so 'blessed'.

Also, since the flasher is dependant on having sufficient current flowing through it, you might need to have the engine running to have enough voltage/current available.

Do the signals not work at all? Do they come on, but don't flash? More details would help.

      Hi mate
Yes I am from the UK and the rest of the electrical system works such as horn, lights, clocks etc.
I have put direct power to each indicator and they all work hence why I suspect the control unit

Have you verified power before and after the selector switch?

You will likely have to pull the tank and/or headlight to get to all the connectors, but you may also find dirty connectors rather than a knackered electrical doo-dad.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your bike? See if you have power at the flasher unit. If you do, follow the wire from the flasher unit to the selector switch. See if you have power going in to the selector switch. If you do, see if you have power coming out. At each of these points, you will find connectors. Each connector is a likely source for problems, so make sure that EACH of them is clean and has good contact.

        Thanks for the location update.

Or you could try making one of these.

NOTE! You will need to add in some components from this design for input protection.

I have now found and fitted a control box for the indicator and the fault has improved as I at least have flashing indicators as follows
With ignition on but engine off select right indicator and works fine including light on clocks, select left hand indicator and the both rights flashe but no left, again light on clock flashes.
With engine running I get nothing.

            Any clues....JK

If you fitted a used unit, then I would suspect it as being bad.
