    1980 GS1000G -- Can I use Points?

So, my timing case cover and timing assembly were taken out in an accident. I've been looking around for replacement parts, but am having a hard time finding the magnetic plate, "signal generator" they introduced in 1980 in lieu of points. I found a super cheap 1979 points assembly on ebay, complete with governor and purchased it--if nothing else I can resell for profit.

The question is: is the 1980 GS1000G's ignition system compatible with points, or will using a '79 points assembly simply not work?

I suspect it would be compatible, although you might need different coils. And you'll get all the headaches of dealing with points.

Shouldn't be terribly difficult to find a new set of signal generators. A whole slew of 1980+ GSes used the same unit, I'd be shocked and amazed if there aren't a bunch on eBay:

Maybe you could also fit an aftermarket (Dyna?) ignition as well, but at that point you're approaching the crazy price that Suzuki wants for a new one.

Damn. Yeah. I was just too hasty with the original purchase. Found a complete signal generator assembly on ebay for only a few bucks more than I threw at the points. I'll just return the points when they arrive...

Thanks for steering me back towards the road.

Why on earth would you want to downgrade to an obsolete part?
