    Depending on where the engine happened to be when it was shut off last, removing the tensioner absolutely can and will allow one or both camshafts to skip time. That "faint kapwing" noise I mentioned earlier...

    Cam chain tension will also vary quite a bit depending on where the engine is in the cycle.

    There are notches at the right end of each camshaft, and at TDC these should be pointing either 180 degrees away from each other and parallel with the cylinder head surface, or directly at each other.


    And why on earth did someone think a GS300 needed a manual cam chain tensioner, anyway?

    Someone monkeying with the cam timing system makes my ears go up and my PO BS radar start pinging madly in all directions...
