    Checked the final drive splines

    Since I was replacing my original rear brake line on the '81 GS1000G with a HEL stainless and refurbishing the rear caliper, I decided to take out the rear wheel and inspect the splines.

    This is what I found at 52,000 kms







    The splines were wiped clean for the photos.

    I have now greased them with Honda Moly 60 paste and completed the brake rebuild.

    Any comments on the condition of the splines? They looked as good as new to me.

    Yes Johno, they do look perfect and you did the right thing saturating them and the mating spline with Honda Moly60. They should be good until your next tire change at least. Most clued up people on here check the splines and re-grease every time the rear wheel comes off the bike.

      Don't forget to check the mating splines in the rear wheel. They're usually more prone to wear and can't be inspected properly unless removed from the wheel and cleaned up.

        Yes, driven spline is the primary concern. Some 1981 bikes has the black hard spline and others the soft gold ones.

            Yes...

            you can't see the full length of the teeth when it's installed, nor clean it properly.

                Hi,

                It's possible to clean and check the driven spline in the wheel without removing it. But you have to get in there and take a really close look. Here are a couple of pictures from a recent tire change.





                What you don't want is to see the teeth worn like this:

                  Yes. Unbolt and remove.
                  Cant really see what you need to see while it is in the wheel.

                  WHen it is in the wheel you only see the portion that is not effected by the wear.

                  Worn one compared to new one.

                    Thanks everyone for your replies and advice.

                    I need to replace the rear tyre soon so it will come off for a full inspection and clean.

                    Have the Honda Moly 60 so I will be ready to go.

                      My '81 1000G had the better steel splines, so hopefully you'll be ok too. But definitely remove to inspect.
