    Tach nonfunctional

I was looking through the Clymer manual and I am having a hard time figuring out how to check how to disassemble the tach. The tach is totally nonfunctional. Whats the best way to diagnose this? Any help is hugely appreciated.

    Thanks!

It is technically a sealed unit. You can VERY carefully pry up the bezel and take it apart,, There are no parts available that I am aware of. So other than cleaning & lube..
I am assuming you checked the cable and made sure it was turning..

If you hadn't , check the cable to make sure it's turning. Put the bike on the center stand, disconnect the tach cable from the tach end, rotate the wheel by hand to see if the cable spins.

I'll have to check this in the morning. The tach is really just about the only thing that doesn't work on the bike, otherwise it seems to be in very good shape. I purchased it a week ago as my first bike. It would be nice to see what it actually idles at.

tach has nothing to do with the front wheel. Most likely the cable is broken...

I will say that I was confused by the whole spinning the wheel part I'm off to see if the cable is broken.

Well I took off what should have been the tach cable, but there doesn't appear to be a cable in the housing. I am assuming I should just see it. I can see a part that protrudes slightly from the engine that is spinning. Does the cable supposed to link up to that or is that some sort of old peice of cable?

                  Thanks!

Phil, Yes you should be able to see the 'core' inside the tach drive cable. you may want to remove the tach cable from the bike and remove the core from it to see if its damaged. I don't know 450's but most tach cables are slotted on the engine side and square drive on the tach side.

Hmm. There is nothing in the cable housing. I have to assume that it broke and someone too it out. The slotted side on the engine appears to spin ok. There doesn't appear to be anything in the cable that would move.

Yup, thats a broken tach cable. Replace it with a new one. Can be found for about 14 bucks. Also be sure to get some cable lube and lube the new cable before installing. Otherwise the inner cable will snap again.

Trust me I went through 3 tach cables in one year because I didn't want to spend more on the lube. That idea didn't work. Get the lube.

                          That sounds logical.

I ended up getting a cable from Reynolds Motorsports in Buxton. Problem is solved. Tach seems to work fine now. I love an easy to solve issue!
