    GS850 Driven Hub Wear

I have been through all of the posts that I can find regarding the dreaded spline wear and seen several that looked bad and needed to be replaced. Question is, how much wear is normal, looked at mine over the weekend and they are worn 30 - 40%. Most machines that I have had experience with, once splines start to wear, they go in a hurry.

I gave mine a thorough cleaning and lube with Honda 60 last night and put her back together. Will this stabilize it long enough to wear out the rear tire (about 5 K) or should it be changed asap?

The one I have is a silver colored, are the new ones a harder material or is the wear just due to lack of regular maintenance? No idea how long it's been since mine has been lubed. It had some grease on it but it was old, dirty and not moly based.

    Thanks

I suspect because yours is worn down 30~40% it's time is very short, at least that was the case with mine. once it started wearing it all went down hill fast. about 3K if I remember correctly.

Hate to tell you this, but the silver one is the newer, harder spline.

Hopefully you can chalk it up to lack of PROPER lubrication (Moly 60).

No idea how long it might last, but if it were mine, I wouldn't be riding it any farther than I was willing to push it.

Is the one on the right the same colour as yours is?

If that's what you have, you don't have the "silver" one, you have the softer "gold" one.

Like I said earlier, "how far do you feel comfortable pushing your bike? Don't ride it any farther than that."

How about wear on the drive side? Mine look a little rounded on the leading edge but can't see anything more than that.

BB, honestly listen to what Steve is trying to get across to you. If you want to chance it and be forced to push the bike for a long distance or even wait for a vehicle to come get you then hold off. Otherwise, replace it now while you have it off.

I'm faced with the same type of dilemma on my alternator rotor and yea, I'm replacing now while the bike is down and the cover is off. I'd rather not be stranded somewhere because I didn't want to spend the money

It's down for a couple of weeks anyway, I'm replacing carb boots, o-rings, air box tubes, overhauling the cam chain tensioner (oil leak), replacing the o-ring on the starter (oil leak). Straightening out the instrument mounting bracket, replacement tach and speedo (PO damage). I'm in no hurry, I want it to be right and ready to go in the spring.

When my spline wore down, the drive side was worn, so I ended up replacing it as well.

Is this one the original part or was it replaced at some time? Mine is an 82 model

Unless your bike has high mileage on it, it should be the original.

Without placing them side-by-side in person, it's actually very hard to tell the difference between the later style silver and the soft gold spline. Some do have a part number stamped into the part somewhere.

But yeah, once they start to wear, they go pretty fast.

It's still a current production part, so the new one should arrive pretty quickly.

Dale, did you replace the spline in the housing or the complete housing?
