    Oil Temp

    I have a 83 gs750.. I had to rebuild the motor and i noticed it had a 1 over bore kit. I also have slotted cam gears.I am not sure if they were moved or not.I have had some heating issues since i got the bike.I have a rebuilt head on the bike now everything in the head is new. I have a 4 into header as well.I just bought a 13 narrow earls cooler for it.I also bought a compufire reg/rec.Went on a cooler night ( 14 celcius) ride and the temp hit 101 Celsius pretty quick. I ended my ride so i am not sure how much more it would have went up.I thought the 83 gs750 should run at 95 for the most part?..What temps do these bikes ride at?.I thought with the earls and compu fire it would have dropped my temp.The old cooler and reg rec got up to that temp in about the same time.My plugs are normal as well.If my bike keeps running hot as in 120 plus Celsius where else can i look for a problem?.Sorry for the long winded message.I just wanted to explain what i have on and in the bike.

    I don't know though according to my conversion table those temps don't seem to be out of line? Where I live (air temps during the summer can vary from 95-106 ) I'm sure my engine temps are well higher then yours. I run the Compufire as well, as for the engine temp not sure what the effect it has on it, though I know my charging system does run cooler.

    Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

      Sounds like someone put on a pipe and didn't rejet, causing it to run lean and overheat. The oil cooler is doing it's best, but the motor is crying out for carb setup. Just an opinion. My 1100 used to hit 280F-300F until I put a cooler on it, now it sits at 210F, which is just right. I am convinced my bike is running lean.

        120 degree Celsius = 248 degree Fahrenheit.
        I don't think that is out of line at all.

          Agree. If the bike is running over 150C (300F) on a regular basis though, an oil cooler may be in order.

            I did do a re jet and the plugs look great..It is not running lean at all...I was just worried.A bike shop owner told me his doesn`t run over 95 celsius and nor should it.My bike has been up to (120 Celsius) 250 F a few times and i shut it off.So i am worried about nothing with 230 to 250 defree F?.

              No worry. My GS ran constantly at an indicated 300 F. I rode it across the country several times before I installed an oil cooler, which did bring the temps down.

                Water boils at 100 degrees C. What better way to rid the oil of condensation than to go over that temperature?

                  The guys are correct, oil runs at 120C or a bit above, typically water in a water cooled motor runs anywhere up to 98C, nothing wrong with the temps you are getting.

                    Thanks a lot guys...I have been worried for years about the temp of my bike.The mechanic said his runs at 95 all day long.He said it shouldn`t get much over that.maybe he was trying to make some money off me?.I feel a lot better about running the bike on a hot day now .

                        That was years ago..I do all my work myself now...It has always been in the back of my mind about that temp thing..I bought a new earls cooler for nothing lol..The stock one was doing it's job lol.Guess i should have come on here and asked first..Well the earls looks good ..

                          This is a pretty normal temperature for a GS1100E under warm conditions

                          270 degrees Fahrenheit = 132.222222 degrees Celsius

                          After putting the compufire on mine dropped to about

                          220 degrees Fahrenheit = 104.444444 degrees Celsius
                          which is verging on cold. Just high enough to get rid of condensation.

                          I would call HOT over

                          300 degrees Fahrenheit = 148.888889 degrees Celsius
