So when I got this '81 GSGLX the tachometer wasn't working and discovered the cable broke. Installed new cable and it was working but very sluggish.
Going down road tach developed a whine(?). Disconnected cable.

Can you take apart these tach's and clean them up? Is it worth the effort?

Yes you can take the gauges apart. The two methods are cutting the plastic housing apart and un-crimping the bezel.

I hope you don't mind if I use your pictures, Ed.

Using a small straight screwdriver and needle nose pliers you can carefully pry the bezel off the front of the gauges. Then clean up the insides. Use a punch to carefully bend the bezel back on the housing when you're done.

Inside there is a spinning magnet and a bell housing that actuates the needle of the gauge. The bell housing can get full of muck and cause inaccurate displacement.








The middle picture is my busted gauge from my wreck a few years ago. I just wanted to give you a glimpse of the inner workings.

Before you take it all apart, you might want to take the gauges off, turn them upside down, and spray your favorite silicone lubricant inside the cable connector holes to see if that improves the situation.
