    gs1000 tack/speed gauge housing

As you can see my tach needle has jumped ship. This suspiciously happened not long after replacing the tach cable... anyone have a similar thing happen?

I've tried to remove the plastic housing over both. so far removed the trip meeter knob and the rubber edging. Does this just pry off now. I don't want to break it. Don't see anything else about screws etc in manuals. Seems it should just come off now.

And then can this needle just be reinserted?

It cannot. The shaft is broken off and stuck in the needle.

Find another tach to replace it with, or barring that, another to rob the guts from.

Are you doing a restoration project of some kind on a GS? Let everyone see what you are doing by posting the details here.

I have a couple of tachs, I'll go look.

OK, I have a complete one that works well, and one that has had the fuel guage taken out, otherwise it's good.

          Both from a '78 1000.

Thanks both of you. Don't really know how part selling/exchanging works in this community. Can you let me know? I have a couple of old parts you may be interested in.

I'll see if I can get mine off and look see. Any idea if the plastic housing pops off? Or best way to get it off? Rubber is removed from around the edge

Two ways, pry the thin metal around the edge away so it can come off, or cut the plastic all the way around. I like the prying method.

If you can't get them apart, you probably should send those gauges to someone who knows what they are doing. The housing doesn't pry off.

                Again...

The thin metal ring that holds the glass on the orange plastic housing prys off very easily.

Oh crap you're taking about the black plastic outer case?

Take out the nuts that hold the chrome covers, then the big mounting bracket, then little screws that hold the gold colored bracket, then some more stuff.

When you get down to the just the orange housing that's when you pry the metal thing around the edge.

I don't think he's even removed the gauges from the cluster yet. All he's said is that he's removed the trip knob and the gasket.

I could have taken a bunch of pictures last week, I had one apart about four times.

Ok the picture (second time) helps. I'll keep at it.

Thanks Gregory, not sure that tach unit is the same as mine which has the fuel gauge there as well.

Tkent I got the tach unit out. Not particularly interested in opening it up as I assume I need to cut it as is described on the site somewhere, then from what you say I'd need the guts of another to fix it anyway.

I'm interested in that working unit from the 78 GS1000 you mentioned. Let me know what you suggest.
