Ticking noise when low on gas

Things are going well for me and Giselle, my GS-L model 750. I recently did a chain and sprocket change (530 conversion) and all is well.

However, it seems to me that whenever my fuel indicator starts indicating a low fuel level, the engine can start ticking on the left side. It doesn't bother me too much, because I know the GS series deals with a problem like this and it's nothing to worry about, but why only when my fuel is low? Anyone?

It's possible that it's there all the time, but you can only hear it when the fuel is low.

The amount of fuel in the tank might be a damper on the noise. As the level gets low, there is less damping.

Next time you get to where you can hear the noise, get on the left side of the bike to isolate the area. Fill the tank then start the engine. Get back down on the left side to see if you can still hear the noise.

      Possible a loose valve setting?

Okay, so I ran low on gas and the noise came back, but as soon as I flipped the petcock to reserve there was no noise.

Slight hole in the petcocks diaphragm allowing it to lift off the seat, loose vacuum returning to the seated position and repeated over and over again?

It has to have something to do with my #2 carb. Recently it's started dripping out of the overflow tube...

As the days go by, my carbs are leaking more and more out of the drainage tubes. I'm beginning to think the petcock is on its way out as Eli69 stated. Is this a usual symptom?

Best check your oil now, see if it has a gas smell to it. Probably need to pull the tank and get the gas shut off ASAP anyways.

My bike left gas puddles one day. It surprised me since I had rebuilt carbs a year ago. Anyway, I just tapped on the float bowls and it cured it.
