Can anyone tell me the year of my engine from the engine number? Was there any engine changes between 1979 and 1980 or can I rest assured that if I get rings, gaskets, etc from either year it will fit?

Any difference between years of manufacture?
I've got a GS400 (Frame number GS400 - 72977 and engine number GS400 – 77872) in Australia that I'm trying to locate parts for it on various US websites. My registration claims the bike is a 1980 unit but I can't find any parts for 1980 GS400 only 1977-1979. The various shops in the US tell me they don't sell parts for international models but I think that's just because they are also unsure of the exact year of my bike.

Here in the USofA, our last 400 was in '78.
Other non-US owners have found success at a place in Europe, at csmnl.com.

The states only received the 2 valve per cylinder model. I suspect you have a 4 valve per cylinder model. Canada and Europe received the 4 valve model as well. That's all I have for you.sigpic
