I have been told that the 4 little k&n airfilers I can get for my 83 1100e are so much better than the stock cleaner on board. Is this true? Why? and how much are they?

My little pod filters cost me somewhere around $2000.00 if you count my time as money, and I do.
They aren't any better. Someone a little less bitter about them will explain.Currently bikeless

Yeah, too much trouble for me for something that results in a 20% reduction in gas milage and a performance increase so slight you cant detect it. Besides, the trials and tribulations of rejetting and trying to get the bike to run decently are a major turn off for me.

They are supposed to help with the airflow, but I've had bikes with pods and without and I can't really tell a difference. If you're not a racer or someone who's good at jetting I wouldn't bother. If you keep the stock air cleaner clean you should have no problems and no jetting headaches. It's up to you. Aftermarket pipes seem to make the biggest difference in regards to performance increases. Some pipes are just slip ons where you don't have to even re-jet and can get some extra ponies out of your bike. I would research well before going down this road. I've travelled it and it's rocky as f@ck.

If I had it to all over again I wouldn't. For awhile, after I got things sorted out I could tell that it did have a gain in power, but like everything else you get used to it and felt like stock again. As far as gas mileage goes, If you really ride hard all the time and are heavy handed, gas mileage drops into the high 20's. I can regularly get 42 mpg on my 1100e on the freeway. This is with a V&H meg exhaust and Dyno-jet stage 3 kit.
