Purpose of the foam in the sprocket cover?

Is it just for noise reduction or does it serve another purpose. Mines about shot and figured if didn't have any other purpose I'd pull it out before it got flung out sometime while I'm going down the road.
Shouldn't be to hard to fabricate a replacement if it gets noisy afterwards.

Sorry I left this twice. Network acted up. I'd complain to my ISP but I was at work... and maybe I'll just leave it alone.

I've never had a bike that had a foam layer inside the sprocket cover. I see no reason why you should need it.
