bike problem?
I have an 82 GS 1100 ez. The bike sat in a garage for 17 years until i baught it 6 months ago. I got the bike running about a week ago. i thought i had it running pretty mutch spot on until last night. when i went to start it last night it cranked over twice and then there was a big bang from the gear box area ,and the starter bound up 8O . i let the clutch out, rocked the bike back and forth, reengaged the clutch and the bike started and ran fine. at that point i decided to put it away and check it out in the morning. This morning it started and ran fine, no wierd noises or anything. so i took it for a ride. everything seems fine, but im a little worried. has anyone had an expierience like this? should i be woried, or should i go with the old adage "if it aint broke dont fix it" ?Tags: None

A "bang" could be caused by fuel in the crankcase causing hydro-locking.(?)
Take off the oil cap and smell the oil for fuel. The level may be high due to fuel in there also.
Could also be something to do with the starter clutch.
Since it's sat so long, riding around might be all it needs if starter clutch related.
Be sure there's no fuel in the oil and the oil is fresh. That will eliminate the hydro-locking possibility.
Hope it's OK. Good luck! And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

Just throwing somthing out there, how about it was partially in a gear and it went BANG then jumped into a different gear....
i've had mine in what i thought was neutral (the gear indicator light was on for neutral) and it went bang! out of second.
ride it to check it out and to get everything lubricated and then see what noises there are if any.
starter clutch or clutch sticking from not being used???

A big metallic clank/ clunk/ bang from the bottom end? Sounds like the starter clutch needs looking at.

Most likely when you tired to start it, it backfire and the pistons was not past TDC so the explosion was driving the piston downward while the starter was trying to push the piston upward and that's when you hear that big metal clang????
Check your timing and battery, It should turn over pretty fast when starting.1166cc 1/8 ET 6.09@111.88
