Valve clearance

I've got 8 shims of various thicknesses and 29mm diameter, which I think is the right diameter for your bike, right?

I'll sell them to you for $10 plus shipping (they are at least six dollars each from the dealer).

Here are the thicknesses of the 29mm shims:
2.60mm - 4 of them
2.55mm - 2 of them
2.70 - 2 of them

smallest feeler guage I have is .038mm and it doesnt fit in any of them except #4 EX.


isnt this strange? or am I doing it wrong? I would assume the majority of them would be to loose from wear.

That's the problem with not having the right tool. They could all be right at, or a hair above, .03 and be fine. I know how hard it is to find a feeler gauge that goes down that far. I searched and searched and finally bought an one from a SUzuki dealer - $30 and it goes down to .02mm:shock:

As long as you follow the steps in the manual (make sure it's stone cold - overnight, not just a few hours) you should be OK. You could put in a smaller shim and measure again. If it's over .08, then it must be OK with the original shim. If it's not then the new shim is good...

No usually when valves wear the clearance gets less, think of it this way the valve wears and the seat wears (less metal on the faces) and the valve goes up (so does the bucket and shim) towards the camshaft.

my bike only has ~36k miles on it.

would they wear that much?

mine has 19k, one valve was down to .00 mm ! remember the valve clearance is .001 to .003 thou. (about) if it was at .0015 from the factory and the valve and seat wore about .002 thou. valve is open .0005 thou.
what is the thickness of a sheet of paper .002-.003 thou. ?
