1982 gs850g 5,000 rpm @62 mph, the redline (9,000 rpm) is almost double that, it would have been nice if suzuki would have given it a 6th gear, but it is what it is.

Best I can determine, my '82 850 runs approximately 14 MPH per 1,000 RPM in 5th gear. That gives me 56 MPH @ 4,000 RPM, 63 @ 4,500, 70 @ 5,000, etc. This is definitely NOT indicated speed by my wildly optomistic speedometer.

I absolutely agree about a 6th gear! I find myself wanting to upshift at 70+ all the time.

well my tach may be slightly off which i have suspected (it has new tires on it), but the way i figure is if it doesn't come apart when i redline it, it's close enough...
Saynna your welcome, and your english is better than my french... i dont know ANY!

            gs550 same rerading in 6

I get the same approximate readings in top gear (6) on my 78 gs550... sounds like you are in a normal range...

About 6,000 rpm at 80-85 mph for me. (What's all this 60mph stuff?) Your bike sounds perfectly normal.

Please keep in mind that old tachometers and speedometers are not very accurate, so no one can be too exact.

Many have complained that they think the 850 needs a sixth gear, but the engine is perfectly happy to zip along at 85mph all day. Don't worry so much about the RPM. Besides, 6,000 rpm is just where all the fun starts...

It seems to me that 5K with a 9K redline is just fine. I'm not sure what the torque curve looks like but I get better throttle control at 5K than with any lower RPMs.
