Life of brake fluid in '80 GS850G??

When I first got my bike it had been siting un used out side for two years. So whne my Suzuki mechnic changed the front pads he also bleed the front brakes.

I have put 15k on the bike in three years. The front brakes were geting a bit spongy so I decided to flush the system again. WOW the fliud in the rez was not that bad but the fluid in the calipers was RUSTY and DARK!! How long should brake fluid last in these systems?? MUCH better brake feel now!

    3-5 years for brake fluid.
i change mine every other year or when I need to do a brake job.

    usually every other year.

its been a lot longer longer than two years since it had been flushed.

You may possibly have a leaky bleeder screw in your caliper, letting the fluid absorb moisture at an accelerated rate. Also would absorb air at an accelerated rate, explaining the spongy feeling. Either get new bleeder screws (aftermarket) or wrap the threads of your current ones with some teflon tape (I've never had good results with this method, but some have).

ask him how much brake fluid he used to flush it if he can remember, its possible the the rubber is deteriorating in your system and turning the fluid dark but rusty i don't think so unless a boot is torn in your master or caliper and water is getting in. does it sit outside?

It depends on your mileage and climate really, my daily ride-to-work bike here in wet old Holland gets new brake fluid every year and the feel is noticable improved after.
