Put the bike on the centerstand and in neutral. Engine off, turn the rear wheel and see if you hear the noise. Engine on in neutal; the wheel will still spin a little bit; do you hear it?Believe in truth. To abandon fact is to abandon freedom.

I am starting to tear into the final drive... but can't figure out how to get the cover off that is on the wheel side. It looks like I can buy some small screws that thread into the cover, and then pull it off with those. That is my plan at this point. If I am going in the wrong direction, please let me know.

82GS1100 "Final Drive Phantom"
Okay... I just pulled the final drive apart. Everything "looks" okay. Didn't see any gear that was overworn or anything. I'm at a loss on this. I could take pictures if it would help anyone. But, overall, it seems like I am chasing the "Final Drive Phantom".

I think you can do this. Maybe Grandpa can confirm it. Remove the spline cylinder that sits in the hub of the wheel and put the wheel back on. That would remove the mechanical connection between the final drive and the wheel.
Roll the bike and if you hear the sound then you can be pretty certain that it is somewhere in the wheel--bearing or break most likely. If it goes away, the final drive/hub gearing becomes the more likely culprit.
Other diagnostics:
put a piece of tape on the rear rim. Have somebody watch from the side as you push it along the pavement. Is the tape always in the same clock position when the click occurs?
Ride the bike along a level strech, let off the throttle and pull in on the clutch. Now apply the rear brake very lightly, not enough to stop it but just enough to bring the pads in contact with the rotor. Does the click go away or change in any way?Believe in truth. To abandon fact is to abandon freedom.

82 1100GL Final Drive - Bad Bearing
It seems the bearing in my Final Drive is bad. The one I got off eBay feels MUCH smoother than mine. Problem is, the one off ebay has REALLY bad splines that marry to the rear wheel.
I'm going to attempt to swap them out. Anyone see a problem with this? I'm not SUPER clear on how to take it apart... but I will just start fiddling until I break something or succeed. 8-[
Wish me luck... and please reply if you have any insight.

I'm a little late to this thread, but, in regards to the final drive I got off e-bay: after discovering that it wasn't really the problem, I left it on the bike rather than re-do what I had already done. A few weeks into this years riding season, it developed a grinding noise. Luckily, my attempts to ebay the original unit failed, so I had that one to put back on. When I removed the "replacement" to put the original back on, I ended up with gear oil dripping out from the shaft area. after a few moments panic, it was determined that it came from the seal on the drive end, not the transaxle end. SO....I still have that unit, but it probably needs to be rebuilt. I haven't looked into doing it yet, but I might get bored and take a wack at it.

Well, I still have the "popping" noise. I'm not sure what it is... but will probably look into it when Spring comes (I don't have the garage space to work on it). I'm really at a loss at this point. The final drive ended up looking fine.
