    jetting nightmare

well my bike(1980 GS550) hasnt been running good for about 50 miles now, so i grew the balls to tear the carbs off to do a good cleaning, this is the first time i've cleaned them, owned the bike since march and have put 2800 miles on it, first off i had a helluva time getting all the stripped screws off the carbs , had to use an impact driver, and when i took the float bowls off , i found 2 pilot jets that are stripped and i cant get out, and also found 3 or 4 different main jet sizes (i lost one, haha, but i think it was the same as another), the far right (from the rear oft he bike) has a K92, the next one has a RD925 or 526 , and the next one is about the same size as the first one, but different numbers, and the last one is on the floor somewhere, does this sound right to anyone???? i dont think that any of them are mikuni jets, the only thing done to the bike is 4 into 2 straight pipes (probably homeade), and what this guy calls a jet job, any ideas on what i should do?, anyone recommend a dynojet stage 3, and how should i get my stripped pilot jets out?

Save yourself the headache and expense and just buy a "new" set of carbs off ebay. That way you won't have to play around with jetting, cause that is NO fun...

I get the feeling that this may all be a dream. Hopefully when mycat8urskidoo wakes up in the morning, life will be a little better.

I highly recommend you put your carbs in a box, and take everything down to your local Suzuki dealer to "sort things out". Sorry dude, you just opened up a HUGE "can of worms"

Ebay!!! I'm telling you, I had an issue with the carbs on my GS1100E that had been sitting for a few years, took them off, cleaned them, put them back on, still ran like crap! Bought a "new" set of carbs off of eBay for 100 bucks, slapped them on, and waa-laa!!! Problem solved! Keep your old carbs for parts and get a new set, best advice I've heard yet!!!!

do you have the stock air cleaner?

Z1 Enterprises specializes in quality Motorcycle parts for Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha Classic Japanese motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's.

put a stock exhaust back on if possible if not at least some mufflers, but if you insist on not using mufflers you get to hone up on your rejetting skills.

you can use some penatrating oil on the pilot jet, let 'er soak and try removing it (heat from a small butane torch at times helps) post pictures if possible.

I do have the stock air box, i was thinking of the stage 3 kit and pods because the carbs are a pain to get in and out, and that way i wouldnt have to try and find mufflers, i was also thinking about the new carb idea, anyone know what other years/engine sizes will fit this bike?

got my pilot jets out, had to use an easy out on 2 of them so they are pretty well junk, does anyone know if these jet kits come with pilot jets, and do they have multiple main jets?, i might give it a try messing around with it, see what comes out of it, or i might just rebuild them all , or do what everyone said to do and get some used ones off ebay

Sounds like you are in the front of the boat and i'm in the rear ( nautical terms ). Going thru the same thing on my 550. I got another set of carbs and found there could be worse ones than I had. I think it's the Suzuki shop or find a mech that works at home. (be very very careful).

Dynojet kits (at leat my 1100 kit) do not come with pilot jets. They come with needles, and 3 different sets of mains.
