I finally got the cover off thanks to some help from t3rmin, but trashed the gasket in the process. That booger was really stuck on there, and good too.

When you say the same order, I assume that means don't flip them around front to back also, but do I have to put them back in the exact same tooth?

I think he just means make sure they're still alternating friction disc, steel plate, friction disc, steel plate, all the way through. The teeth don't matter and otherwise mixing them up shouldn't really matter either.

Teeth don't mean squat. I mean just don't flip them and keep them in order.

I'm fixing to do a clutch job on my GS650GL. Should I order just the eight friction disks and new springs or do the steel disks need replacing too. I have not looked inside as yet so I have no idea what to expect. The clutch works fine but but disengages just as I pull on the lever so I am expecting some plate wear.

I take it you found a place to paint it?

Yes sir I did. My neighbor and I were chattin over the fence and he recommended a local fella not listed. I went and saw his work and we hammered out a price. He's not cheap but decided it was worth it to me to get it done all the way. Pic of my refurb'd seat is over in the appearance forum where I'll post the rest of my tins when I get em back in about a month.

Word is it's pretty rare to have to replace the steel discs. I'd just order the friction discs (and springs probably), clean off the steel discs with a solvent and some steel wool, and see how it works.

Have a look at the steel plates first, usually they don't need to be replaced, unless the clutch was either abused, or run for an extended period when slipping was present, which overheats the plates warping them. If the faces of the steel plates are blue, then they are junk. If they are blue, they are probably also warped. I had 17K on my clutch, and while it would slip badly above 8000 rpm's, the steel discs were fine. I added Barnett friction plates, and a fresh set of Suzuki OEM springs.
