Whineing to no end!

Have you checked your cam chain tensioner?
1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

Sure did, one of the first things. I pulled the front guide and it appeared OK, intended to replace it, but the road gods ate it up along with new gaskets. I need to reorder. If I read my Clymer correctly I need to pull the jugs to replace the rear guide.
My bigest problem is space to work. Will do a little more testing today.

Well spun the engine with a speed wrench and couldn't hear anything that sounded like the whine. Next week I will remove the idler gear for the starter, thus removing it from the chain of events and bump start the old girl and hear what we hear. If it still whines it will have eliminated one possible cause.Gustov

..............uh no, the front and rear cam chain guides are installed after the cylinders/jugs are dropped down over the pistons. The guides are installed from the top.

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. H.D.T.

Its been awhile since I did my 1150 and remembered doing the guide install from the top. I doubt the 1150 is different from the 1100, so apparently I have a memory glitch. Sorry bout that.

Well fellas, I spent the holiday up at my new place and haven't had a chance to deal with it yet. Tomorrow I plan on bump starting as posted previously.
I did take the time on Sunday to drive up to the Seattle area and pick up a 81 750 L with a frozen motor. left outside with the plugs out. Tank is toast, no seat or side covers. Beautiful exhaust though. Will post more tomorrow.

update
I put the valve covers and coils back on. Plugged the vacume line and plugged a funnel into the fuel line. My intent was to insure that Suzi Q would start when I bumped it. I filled the funnel with gas until it stopped bubling and hit the starter, boom fired right up. Yes the whine is still there. I grabed the stestacope and started searching again, screwdriver, metal rod and finally a doctors stestacope and searched some more.
What I found is the whine is loudest behind the clutch cover. Looks like a new gasket and inspection.

Well I need to have a new rear tire put on Suzie Q, so have been making more room to work in my single car garage. Since I will be pulling the exhaust I might as well pull the engine and take a look at the whole thing. The whine is definitely coming form the lower end, loudest behind the clutch cover but can be heard behind the timeing cover and stator as well.
I wonder if it was ridden with gas in the oil and messed up the bearings. Time will tell.

Well the jugs are off and the guides are out.
The long straight one (the front) is not overly worn compared to the new one the road gods took as taxes.
The rear shows that the tenshioner was definitely working, and in my opinion the rear guide is shot.
The next chance I get work on the old girl, I will measure the timeing chain for wear. Say Chief, do you have the minimum length between pins so I can compare for stretch.
