Non GS carb question
I just picked up a 73 Honda XL 175 Enduro ( Elsinore ) and it had almost a full tank of 20+ year old gas in it. I pulled the carb cause the slide was stuck in it. Soaked it with pb blaster and then soaked it in a can of kerosene. After I got the slide out I cleaned out all the holes and jet areas with carb cleaner. I got the bike to fire with starting fluid but wouldn't stay running. I checked the carb again and I am not getting any gas to flow into the carb bowl.I have fresh gas in the tank and have flow coming from the gas tank to the carb. Did I miss cleaning something in the carb or is the carb shot?Tags: None

Evidently something got missed. Did you remove the jets to clean them?
Just spraying them with carb cleaner won't do much to reverse 20 years of neglect.
Sounds like you have a plugged float valve into the carb.
Your best bet is to remove the carb (again), take it completely apart, and soak it overnight in a can of Berryman's Carb Cleaner. This gallon-size can has a basket to hold all your little parts, so take everything off the carb body that you possibly can, then dip everything that is metal. Do not dip any o-rings or gaskets. When you remove the parts the next day, rinse them off with warm water (my wife lets me use the kitchen sink \\/ ), then use strands of copper wire to poke through all the holes in the jets. Follow the poking with spraying carb cleaner and compressed air to make sure they are open and clean. There are holes and passages in the carb body that you need to make sure are clean, too. Before you spray into them, put on your safety glasses. Some of these passages will come right back and spray in your face.
Can't help with how to set the adjustments on that carb, so it might be best to count how many turns out it is now, record that number so you can remember it, and start with that when you get everything back together.

Thanks guys I will give that a try. It is an easy carb to pull off and take apart so its not that bad that I have to do it again. Can't complain either since I got the bike for free. It has under 3,000 miles on it. still looks pretty decent for its age I will try to post pics of it tomorrow.
