What is a Electronic Advance?

Can some one tell me what a Electronic Advance is? I have ordered a DYNA S DS3-2 for my 1982 GS850G other members said I need to install an electronic advance from an earlier model.

It's actually a "mechanical" advance. Behind the signal generator (on my bike an 81) or on points bikes (79 and older) there is a mechanical device with springs that advances and retards the timing. 1982 or 1983 (can't recall the year) and later don't have the mechanical advance, just the signal generator. The Dyna (S) needs it. I think the Dyna is designed that way because they figured in most cases it was going to go on a points bike.

I will purchase form local junk yard, is this something that can be installed by inexperienced person or should I not attempt.

I think it's pretty easy. It has to be positioned correctly. check your clymers or manual and see if the instructions look complete. Pictures, etc...

thanks, I will try to find some illustrations to see what it looks like.

The crankshaft is keyed to accept the mechanical advance, which when installed, slots into place. It is a very simple install, and it will only fit one way, so you cannot install it incorrectly.

all strange to me but you guys make sense thanks I will try to locate one as soon as Dyna S comes in.

Looks like this.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/78-S...002QQitemZ120159176799QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Make sure you get the Nippon Denso one... (think there is no KD one for the 850 anyway).
You may need an 850 as the weights & springs may be model specific (to give the right advance curve) although one of the other models may be the same or they might all be the same...... (Sorry I don't know the answer to that one, but it would make sense that they all needed the same advance at the same RPM...)

Dan :)

Thanks Salty, now I can go to junk yard without worry thanks to all of you. I will ask fo a 81 gs850g with points.

1979 850’s had points with mechanical advance. For 1980 and 1981, the bike had electronic ignition with mechanical advance. In 1982 Suzuki went to a full electronic ignition without mechanical advance.

Any 850 mechanical advance unit “should” fit – ’79-’81. I use quotation marks since I’ve never tried to retrofit a mechanical advance unit on an ’82 bike. I’m pretty sure it will work, but not 100% positive.

Good luck and please keep us posted on your results.

strange, a friend of mine's 82 has mechanical advance.

As far as I know, 79 was the last year of points ignition systems and starting in 80 all models were changed to electronic ignition (there may be an exception to this for the G/shaft models). First and 2nd year electronic ignition systems (1980-1981 and I THINK 1982 still used the mechanical advance from the earlier models. Starting in 1983, the mechanical advance was eliminated and that function was assumed by the electronic ignition module. However, the keyed slot on the crankshaft end was not eliminated on any year models, so all models can be retrofitted with a mechanical advance.

Well, my '82 850 has the electronic advance. The signal generators on the end of the crank mount well down into the recessed area on the end of the engine – the plate is sort of gull-winged shaped which allow the magnetic pickups to sit down where the mechanical advance normally resides.

What you are looking for is really easy to install. Once you take the cover off you'll see the signal generator in place with three screws holding it. That's the part the dyna will replace. If you have a 1982 or earlier the mechanical advance is already there. '83 and later there isn't one. (I think) The way to tell is to look at the signal generator. If it has 2 wires you have a mechanical advance. Just unscrew and pull off the signal generator. If it has 4 wires go shopping; you're going to need the mechanical advance.

In the center is a 19mm bolt and in the middle of that is a smaller 12mm bolt. with both wrenches in place loosen the 12mm and use the 19mm to keep the shaft from turning. Once the 12mm bolt is out, if only one thing comes out you need a mechanical advance. If two things come out, and the second one has springs on it, that's the mechanical advance. The part that came off first spins around and triggers the coils in the signal generator. The dyna will have a black plastic cylinder that will replace it and a washer to hold it in place. Bolt it on, screw the dyna in place and follow instructions for the wires.

Piece of cake.

Just took this photo of my 1982 GS850. Note: this is the second generation electronic ignition with ELECTRONIC ADVANCE. To install a Dyna ignition in a 1982 or later 850, a mechanical advance unit from a 1979-1981 bike is needed.
