Electricl on GS1100gl

Hi to all. I've recently had the engine off the frame on my 1100gl. I had to remove broken exhaust bolts and repair the secondary drive unit.

Since the engine has been put back onto the frame, most of the electrical have gone nuts on me. No gear selector or neutral light. No side stand indicator and most importantly no signal lights. (stays on solid). My mechanic has gone through the wiring and found nothing wrong. I have a Clymer manual and the schematics are brutal to read. Any sugestions???

Getting frustrated.

does the horn work? does the front brake light switch work? that will indicate (to me) B+ power is on its way to the neutral light, and the gear position switch. And power should be at the signal relay and signal control.

Oil pressure light operate? fuel gauge work? rear brake switch? Need more information, but sounds like a ground wire is "off".

Engine starts and runs?

What year is your 1100? I have found problems with the Clymer wiring diagram, so please don't use them as the absolute truth in wiring. :shock:

Thanks for getting back. Yes the horn does work, no the front brake light switch does not, but that is a prexhisting problem. I have a new switch and will install it today and see if it is also effected. Oil pressure and rear brake light work and my mech. has checked the ground. The bike, when it's not cold outside, starts and runs well. Power is going to the signal lights, they come on, they just dont flash. My mech. is stumped and he is a real mechanic not a hack like me.

THanks for the info. I'll check with the dealer for a proper schematic. My ride is an 82 and is in fair condition. Only 15,000km (9,500m). Most of what I've done is due to the bike sitting throught those great Canadian winters

do you see the two grounds near the battery (top middle of link) one is the negative post to the engine the other should be connected to the frame and/or engine (to the right and lower of the battery symbol in the link) plus the ground near where the pickup coil symbol (listed on the diagram) is also connected to the frame and/or engine.
I'll check when i get home, but considering you removed the engine I suspect they connect to the ENGINE. (although one could be connected to the frame, just want to make sure)
the ground for the gear position switch (gear indicator not working, correct?) is the engine ***(now that i re-read the diagram I might be un-plugged/bad connection at the gear switch)***, the ground for the side stand light, turn signal control unit, running lights, neutral indicator, ignitor(sp) unit, head lamp and other things depend on those two grounds.
one or both disconnected or not properly grounded, will create havoc.

I looked at my 82 gs850g.
the negative battery cable goes down to the rear of the engine case and grounds to the engine at a bolt in the center of the top of the case, i would advise cleaning the area well and reinstalling the bolt.
the lh ground wire comes out of the loom near the battery and makes it's ground at the negative post of the battery.
the rh ground wire comes out of the loom and goes under the tool carrier then bolts to the rear of the battery tray through the rh bolt of the two bolts. it would be wise to clean that bolt area and install a lead from that bolt to the negative post of the battery.

there are also two additional grounds near the front park lamps.

it may pay to clean all connections on the bike to keep future electrical gremlins away.

what else did you do to you bike (moved,disassembled) when the engine was out that may have affected the problems you are having?
