"L" is the "Ladies" model, Swoopy bars and a cute little tank and low seat.
The other letters designate year models.

All GS850's are Shaft Drive. They Only came in 2 configurations. They are the 850G which is the standard. Here is a pic of a GS850G
And the 850GL which is the Factory Quasi Chopper featuring a teardrop tank, Stepped seat and Leading front axle. Here is a fine example of an 850GL
The last letter is a Year designation and does not appear on the side cover.

“L” stands for “Lowslinger”. Somewhat silly designation which must have had something to do with the cross-cultural translation.
In Japan Nissan sold the Fairlady (called Z car in the USA), Silvia (200/240SX), and Bluebird (Maxima). Lowslinger fits right in with these names.Ed
To measure is to know.

No, no, no. These guys have it all wrong. The "G" model stands for 'Gayblade" and the 'L" model is designated as, as - well. Damn, there are no masculine words that start with "L".

Interesting (and maybe useful for you in parts scrounging) is that (and someone correct me) the 850G and the 1000G are the same bike with different enigines, side covers, seats, wheels all kinds of things are a direct swap between those bikes.
