    question about oil i bought

    i have a question about the oil i bought. i have read a few threads that recomend a sae of a lower letter . i bought this oil at the local wally world . it says it's for vehicles of 1988 or earlier. it's rated at sae sf.. the oil looks almost clear compared to todays car motor oil. the only thing that makes me wonder is it says it heavy duty detergent motor oil. anyone think this would be ok.i'd hate to have to drain it and waste it.

    Hi Mr. coolgoldtiger,

    If your oil is 10w-40 or 20w-50 and does not say "energy conserving", then you are good to go, my friend. Change it every 1500 miles and it doesn't much matter what you use. I always change the filter when I change to oil too.

      Oil

      Well, it may be perfectly fine. Tell us what kind of oil it is and what the weight is. It's probably OK but you've certainly done no damage. Just explain what it is and you'll get some good feedback.

        thanks guys . it's great to have such a huge resource of people who know so much about gs's. the oil is 10w 40 . it doesn't say anything about enery conserving. the company name is accel. and it says "for api service sf. and that it's for model years 1988 or earlier.and that it's an all season multi vicosity,heavy duty detergent motoroil recommended for older model cars prior to 1989. it just looked so clear when i poured it into the bike. this is my first bike and it looked differant then car oil which is that light caramel color. i didn't get all the parts for the carbs ( bought the 4 intake boots ,but never ordered the o rings untill i looked at the boots and realized that they never came with them.lol live and learn) so the bike hasen't ran yet . the oil that was in there was blacker then black , but the filter didn't have any metalic bits in it. so thats a good sign.the oil did smell real gassy, is that normal for bikes. maybe do to the fact that the oil was long over due for a change?

          The oil smelled gassy because there was gas in it. Definitely not normal. Probably caused by a leaky petcock.

            On the gassy oil: Its possible that the petcock (fuel valve) is leaking and letting fuel into the carbs while the bike sits and from there into the engine. Sounds like you have the carbs out now so its a good time to check for a leaking petcock.

            Did you get intake o-rings yet? If not PM me your year and model and I'll send you out a set "on the house", I should have them on the shelf.

              I like to run Shell Rotella T SAE 15-40 in my 850. It has some extra shear propertys for diesel motors. that work good in the transmission PLUS it is $10 a gallon. As those at the June ride will attest to my bike runs good

                      I recently switched to the Synthetic Rotella T oil too for my GS1100esd. My bike seems to run good with it too.

                        At that price, I should have you buy some for me and ship it. Last time I looked at Wal-Mart, it was just under $18.
                        Still not bad, though, compared to the $pecial motorcycle oils from the dealer.

                          Guess I've been out of the loop too long... $18? WOW.
                          Still have 4 gallons of it on the shelf, 2 gallons of 5w40 and about 10 quarts of 75w90 synthetic axle lube. I should be good for a while.

                            She is running the standard dino flavor Rotella, not the synthetic. $10 is the going rate.

                              I run Motorcraft 15-40 HDEO... I can vow that it shifts smoother and runs quieter than when I had the regular rotella T 15/40 flavor. I wanted to find a VOA on it to compare additives of MC vs Rot T

                              I believe that just about any HDEO (Heavy Duty Engine Oil) will keep the bikes operating just fine, I heard Delo recently added Moly, which by word of mouth, supposedly causes wet-clutches to slip.
