BTW - Don, I have a few pics of a gear repair that I did on Cliff's website. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ You may find it interesting. It shows the gear assembly removed.

What I wanna know is how you tell WHICH shims you need, and where does one get them?

The shimming directions are in the shop manual for setting backlash and depth of tooth contact.
you start with setting the backlash on the driven side, then you adjust the depth of tooth contact on the drive side.
the shims still appear to be available.

if you buy a used set of gears they will have some shims on them so between those and the ones on the old set, you should have enough shims and setting the correct backlash shouldnt be a problem, it's explained in the service manual
