tach question
I took apart my tach lastnight to fix the fuel gauge and a crack in the shell...got it back together and now the needle moves slowly...almost like it is dampened now...any idea why? is it supposed to? when I reved it before it would snap right to the rev...but now it creeps up to it...at least now its steady and doesnt bounce anymore.

Cable operated tach?
there are bearings located near the needle and inside the bell. (use a needle, dipped in a light oil to lubricate)
did you clean all the plastic off the hair spring and the other components? (use an artist's paint brush)
is the hair spring damaged?
I have pictures that I can illustrate if you need them.Last edited by rustybronco; 08-29-2008, 05:53 PM.

Tach question
Had exactly the same problem yesterday. If you take the tach back out and look inside you will see the half round drive for the needle that is separated by the wheel that drives it. When you carefully move the needle up so that the 1/2 round drive rotates you may see that there is a dab of oil on it. The oils jams between the drive and the thin cover that surrounds it and works like a damper. I cleaned mine very carefully with alcohol (be sure not to get this on the gauge face as it will eat the numbers!!!)
After cleaning it then snapped back like it did before.
good luck it worked for me.

yes cable operated. I didnt actually open the body of the gauge...the crack could be fixed from the outside and the gas gauge was just a broken wire in the harness...I did use 5 min epoxy to seal the crack...maybe some smooshed inside? I will be opening the gauge all the way soon to replace the face with one from Rudy so pics would be really cool if you have them...that way i will know what to look for while im in there.
thanks
do you think will it hurt to ride it like this...should I just disconnect the cable for the moment?

Wrap tape around the housing as a guide and cut on the tape line with a fine tooth hacksaw.
watch your depth of cut carefully and stop when the cut is just through the plastic.
when the cut just starts to break through, it will continue to go through quickly at that point!
continue the cutting all the way around the housing.Last edited by rustybronco; 08-29-2008, 04:38 PM.
