Just curious why you wanted to get some more output? Are you having charging problems/have you been through the stator papers?

I think some aftermarket stators are wound with thicker wire (and fewer turns) so that they'll produce a little more current. They'll test at 40-50 VAC instead of 65-70VAC at 5,000 rpm during the no-load test.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

motorcycle charging systems are not designed to charge the battery!!!
just to cover the loads. 10-15 amps is a great deal of electricity out of a small 3 phase ac stator.
stay away from series circuits!! keep all extra circuits parallel type. you can light up a whole garage with a gs if you wire it up right.
Ricks electro motorsport will make a stator to your specs if you know what you want. a bigger battery will be necessary and stronger regulator too.
I'd get thinner wire and more wraps if I were designing a dynamo. but what do I know.SUZUKI , There is no substitute

Maybe I formatted my question incorrectly - apologies.
I actually want to rewind my old stator, which was rewound before, with the correct OEM gauge wire and correct amount of turns. I cannot afford a new stator or the shipping from the USA and can get the wire here at reasonable cost.
Does someone know the correct guage and amount of turns for an 18 pole GS stator? (btw I have read the part in the Garage)

I would rewind the stator with heavier gauge wire.
lower voltage and more amperage output, which that would allow more accessories to be used if needed.
just make sure the regulator can handle the extra current (honda r/r comes to mind).
Matchless, I don't think I would worry about how many turns of wire used to rewind the stator. I don't think you can place the wire wraps a neat as they could from the factory.
just use a a slightly thicker wire and rewind as neat as possible.
my humble opinion only.
I don't know the gauge or number of turns, sorry...

Thanks that is an excellent thread, but he jumped around with the wire guage, ,buying #16, then using #18 and also stating that he was sure that the OEM wire was #20. Ok the end result did make the stator work, and then he said the GS550 stator is smaller than the GS1000 as well. As I said a good thread and some good work done.
I would still like to know what the GS 1000 18 pole OEM wire guage is so that I can use that as a reference for rewiring as close to OEM as possible. Some people are suggesting #17. Obviously all should work some better than others.
As rustybronco suggests I can go slightly heavier, but I still need to know what the original was.
Hopefully someone has or will be able to measure an original OEM one with a vernier?? Please??
