I finally figured out what I was doing wrong at the Honda forum. I was lurking for answers while not being a member .
For what Billy is asking to rebuild the carbs, I'm sending mine to him and saving myself the hassle.
So I guess now that I know how to use the Honda forum I'll take any further Honda questions there and stick to posting questions/answers about my '77 GS750 here.
Thanks to all for the helpful answers.

I actually started to pull the battery from my car last night to give it a try, but it was getting late. So would I just run a jumper from the car battery (+) to the hot side of the coils so they would get a constant 12 volts from a source that isn't under a load? The (-) would go to a common grounding point on the bike frame, correct?GS850GT

I see Billy C has it posted that he is not taking any carbs right now as he is overwhelmed with work. Not sure if that is up to date or not, maybe he just forgot and is wondering why he has no business I'd give him a call anyhow.

I called and spoke to Billy's wife, Billy was out on vacation, and she said that at that point and time Billy only had one set waiting on him when he returned. After I removed the carbs, I removed the float bowls and it wasn't very pretty inside there . I've attached a picture for everyone's amusement. I should have the carbs back sometime this week.

I did a BUNCH of those when I had my shop in Hawaii. If you want to send them to me I will go through them for $175.00 including return shipping. If they need parts that would be extra but only whatever the parts cost. I can have them back to you within 2 weeks of me receiving them. Let me know if I can help, Ray.

PO said they ran great? Hahahahaha. That clump of crud on the upper right looks like it has been there for years. These engines are very sensitive, they'll hardly run with partly plugged pilot jet, let alone a super plug on a main jet. Why don't you try cleaning them? Pull and scrub the mains, pilots, and emulsion tubes, and spray gumout and air in the orifices. Keep track of the mains, they may have different sizes for the front 2 carbs. Also, get 4 new plugs installed before trying to start it. Fill the carbs with gas after they are installed. Start it with full choke, don't touch the throttle.
