Looking for Local Repair

I have a 77 G750 I got last year I put come work into it but never got it to run right I took it to a local guy but he didn't quite have all the right answers for me.I rebuild the cabs, installed electric ignition. I'm just trying to find someone in my area that knows and has work with these bike. It's my first bike it's in good condition I love to keep it but it just does not seem to run correctly. It's low on power and will not even get up to 70mph. I live in between Flint and Port Huron Michigan. Thanks Bryan

I know the bike. Pretty well. How well have you "rebuilt" the carbs? Those are pretty hearty machines with even heartier motors. Its hard to break em. Unless youre having compression issues, or havent ADJUSTED THE VALVES, id look to you having a definite carburetion issue...

what has been done

All the brass and gaskets in the carbs were replaced, the valve have not been adjusted, I has about 16,000 miles, it had been sitting since 99 before I got it.The gas tank was relined, plugs. I rebuild the fuel regulator, but I heard that usually does not work. It has air pods on it and were told that I should change it back to an air box. I've been told this bike should scream, right now it only has a wimper Thanks Bryan

What were the jet sizes in the carbs when you rebuilt them? Pods require a good deal of rejetting. They'll alow the bike to suck WAY too much air, making it very lean, and dangerously so for the motor. If they werent rejetted, this could be part of your problem. Also, rebuilding the fuel cock is an excersise in futility in most adventures. Just replace it with new. 45 bucks or so and you wont have to worry bout it for another 20 years. If its not working properly, there is a good possibility that its choking off the bike from fuel.

But, and above and beyond all of this, you need to adjust the valves first. 16k, and you dont know when they've been done last. They SHOULD be at least checked every 3-5kmiles. You cant start to tune the carbs unless the valves are good to go. Its not hard, but will require some patience and some particular tools, and some replacement shims, which are available thru various sources. Unfortuneately, trying to skirt around this particular maintainence issue will only serve to confuse, frustrate and anger you.

Only a little fustrated

Yeah it's a little frustrating that why I'm looking for someone around here so I can let them go through it and either guide me or be able to take it and repair it.I use to be an auto tech so I have some knowledge but went it comes to bikes I'm just getting info here and from the guy i took it too. Diagnosing via internet just isn't going to get it done, it's hit or miss. The carb rebulid kits I guess were factory kits, got them on ebay. Thanks Bryan

I live just south of Port Huron. as TCK said more than likely you will need to correct the jetting issues if they haven't been changed. I'm not saying I can or can't help you with it (limited time like most people) but my offer to help is there if you need it and the planets align.

I have a to do some work on a cb750f (not mine) and to get a '84 virago 920 running correctly in the near future.

TCK, valves are first on the list... then a compression test and we go from there. I start with the basics, no time for chasing my tail.

I'll bring the the compression tester, feeler gauges, in-lb torque wrench, sockets and a timing light when needed.
you'll need a valve cover gasket to start with.
