    ignition question

i have in place of points are what seem to be 2 black boxes where the points should be any idea what they are? i have an 82 gs 850

Those are the pickups for your pointless electronic ignition.
When it's working, it's much better than points.
Once it's set, there is no adjustment necessary.
Replacement is only necessary when a part fails, because nothing wears out.

More info and purty pitchers of the mysteries under the ignition cover:

If your bike is an '82 GS850GL, then I believe it has the early-style electronic ignition with a mechanical advancer -- the second photo on the page.

          Advantage is zero maintenance.

Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

They come with a rev limiter... common sense.
every time I run it up to 10,000 rpm I wonder should I try again for 11,000? naaaah, 10,000's good enough.
